Moving Tools & Tips |

|
Moving can be exciting and, at the same time, very stressful. Our mission is to ease your anxiety before, during and after the move. Moving Soon offers a range of FREE services to manage all stages of your relocation.
We compiled the following tips to help reduce the time, cost and stress associated with moving. We also recommend that you read the Moving Checklist and download a printable version to help you stay organised.
Moving Tips
- Make a moving file. Include your moving checklist, receipts, moving contracts, insurance information, utility provider information (both new and old), school records, current bills, maps and any other important documents and phone numbers.
- If possible, move on a weekday. Banks, government offices, utility companies, etc., are open and it will be easier to handle any issues that may arise.
- Take an inventory of items being moved and make sure you have insurance that covers your move.
- After you've cleaned and dried the inside of your refrigerator, put about ¼ cup of fresh coffee (or baking soda) in a nylon stocking to keep the inside smelling fresh.
- On moving day, hire a babysitter for young children and ensure that pets are not in loading or unloading areas.
- Before the movers leave, ensure that everything was loaded/unloaded. If something was damaged during the move, take photos and notify your moving company immediately.
- Move all valuable items (e.g., jewelry, cash, important papers) yourself. They should be in your possession throughout the move.
Packing Tips
- Pack comfort items last (e.g., coffeemaker, television, computer). These will be the last ones on the truck and the first ones off.
- Designate a color for each room of your new home (e.g., yellow for kitchen, green for dining room). Put colored stickers on each box and the door of each room of your new home. The movers can then quickly identify where to put the boxes.
- Pack a survival kit for moving day. Essentials should include: snacks, coffee, soap, paper towels, toiletries, extra clothes, alarm clock, basic tools (e.g., hammer, screwdriver, flashlight, scissors, tape), utensils (e.g., paper plates, cups, flatware, can opener, dish soap) and trash bags.
- Pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in larger boxes.
- Fill boxes completely without overfilling. Boxes that are not packed completely tend to get crushed. If they are overfilled, they will not properly close and are harder to stack.
- Reinforce boxes with extra tape to prevent the bottom from falling out.
- Computers, TV and other fragile equipment - Box upright and make sure they are padded on all sides. Use extra bubble wrap to protect TV and monitor screens.
Storage Tips
- Use large items for extra storage space - Refrigerators and freezers are perfect for storing items such as towels, clothes and linens.
- Try to use boxes that are uniform in size and shape - they will be much easier to stack.
- Put the heavy (and larger) boxes on the bottom and stack the lighter (and smaller) boxes on top.
- Even though most storage facilities provide ample security, it is best that you take a few extra precautions yourself. Put your most valuable items in the back of the storage unit (in unmarked boxes) and buy a high-quality lock for the door.
- Place frequently accessed items toward the front of the unit.
- It is against the law to store anything flammable or combustible (e.g., paint, thinners, gasoline, oil, cleaning fluids, solvents) in your storage unit.
- Leave small walkways in the storage unit to allow for easy access without having to move everything around.
- Put a list of contents on all the boxes (except for valuables) - on all four sides - to allow you to quickly locate items in storage.
- Write "Fragile" on boxes requiring extra care.
- If you are storing machinery, drain all the gas and oil before putting it in the storage unit.
- Leave space between the storage unit walls and your items to allow for ventilation.
- Make an inventory list of items kept in storage and keep it in a safe place.
